Shared office spaces: Before You Hit “Rent”

We recently came across an article on citylab.com about shared office spaces tucked into some pretty outrageous places. Upon first glance, one might think, oh wow, that looks fun. But, I can’t help but wonder, how many successful businesses are actually launched at places like these?

“Shared” Can Mean “Timeshare” or “Serviced” office space. Know the difference.

Many of the shared office spaces that are available today are operated using a timeshare model. So if you’ve ever used airbnb, that’s the model we’re talking about. What it means is that someone with a spare office down the hall or some extra counter space, can create a little revenue stream by renting it out to people when they’re not using it. They can rent shared offices spaces by the hour, day, week or month. Great concept right?

The airbnb “share” model is very different from “serviced” office space.

But people who rent out offices space on a timeshare basis have their own businesses and interests. So, if you need some space for a few hours or days, and it’s available, the space is yours. Just turn the lights off when you leave. That’s about it.

On the other hand, people who specialize in “serviced” offices are dedicated to the spaces and the people who rent them. It’s their business. You’re their client. So, you may pay a bit more, but you’ll get a lot of extra amenities and benefits that don’t generally come with a timeshare model.

Which is best and why should you care?

It depends on who you are and what you need. The timeshare model can certainly work in a pinch. They’re super-fast, very inexpensive and easy to get in and out of; a quick fix in a hectic world. But before you click the “rent” button, ask yourself what you really want.

Consider the fact that you can, using those same online services, also rent a spot in a serviced coworking space or even a private office for very little added expense. And, you’ll get extras that are built into the price. Not to mention a more stable group of coworkers who are there to do some serious business. And maybe have some serious fun mixed in between. But most of all, at least with Quest, you get the value of a business that is hell-bent on helping you become successful. One that is connected into the community and will help connect you as well.
