I was invited to join the NY Common Pantry on November 22, 2014 by a great friend that works for Bloomberg. I learned that the Common Pantry is dedicated to providing healthy food to needy families as well as educating them about nutrition. I was ready to help out! I am a food lover but as I grow older, I’ve learned that a balanced and healthy meal is important.
Why was this project important to you?
This project was important to me because it makes me think of all the families and homeless people that are less fortunate and don’t have the luxury of regular meals, especially on a holiday. I felt the need to help this organization provide healthy meals to those most in need.
How did you contribute?
I had lots of fun helping different teams pack food for families ranging from 2 to 7 people. I started with preparing double bags that were used to pack food products. Then, we packed a variety of healthy and nutritional food. Lastly, I joined a human chain going up the stairs to load the completed bags for the families to pick up. There was a lot of teamwork involved which gave me the opportunity to meet other individuals that were volunteering and excited to help as well!
