Tell us about your project
I regularly volunteer with several organizations throughout the year and some time had passed since I had last done some charity work. I started thinking about what organization I wanted to help and remembered that a great friend of mine worked at the Miami Rescue Mission which has been serving the homeless since 1922. During Thanksgiving, the Miami Rescue Mission has a Thanksgiving Banquet that feeds nearly 3,000 homeless and needy men, women, and children.
Why was this project important to you?
The project was important to me in several ways. Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and although I may not have everything I want, I definitely have everything I need. Unfortunately, others in our communities aren’t as blessed. While most of us are feasting on amazing meals during Thanksgiving, there are many individuals that aren’t able to feed themselves or their families. Being able to serve was truly a gift to me.
How did you contribute?
We were divided into several groups and my responsibility was as a server. I was assigned a table and served food to the people at my table. The meal consisted of turkey, mash potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, corn bread and pecan pie. Being a server gave me the opportunity to interact with many of the people that came out that day. It was a privilege to serve those in need and put a smile on their face!
